The Music

Prof. Scott Tucker

We will present two distinct programs in China. First, we will perform Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms. This work, written for chorus, soloists, and orchestra in 1868 (the same year as Cornell's founding) is Brahms's highly personal exploration of mortality and comfort. Our second program is presented in three parts: The women's Chorus will sing a mix of songs about day and night, metaphors and celebrations of our brief and miraculous time on earth. Then the men's Glee Club will sing about home and the role that love and family play in our need to belong. Finally, the Chorus and Glee Club will combine to present songs of the eastern and western hemispheres and explore the ways in which they connect. This section will culminate with a world premiere written in collaboration by the celebrated Chinese and American composers Chen Yi and Steven Stucky.
